In 2017, Activision released “Crash Bandicoot N’Sane Trilogy” for the ps4. This consisted in the first three Crash Bandicoot games fully remastered. A year later the game was released for the PC and Xbox One. I played and beat the PC version of the first game and I’m writing here how I felt about this game. I never played the original games on the PlayStation, so this is the opinion of someone who went in blind.
So, how was playing Crash Bandicoot? It was good overall. Starting on the gameplay, it isn’t too much different from other 3D platformers. You run, you jump, you attack enemies either by jumping on top of them or by rotating Tazmanian devil style. Straight forward as it gets actually. The objective of each level is to reach the end of the level alive but you get rewards by doing specific things. You get a gem if you finish the level while not dying and destroying all the boxes. You can also do time attack challenges in which you can be rewarded with a relic if you can beat the stipulated times. It runs at a smooth 60 FPS with no frame drops that I could report. All in all a very enjoyable experience and I can see why this game/franchise is so beloved by the gaming community. The only less positive remark I can give is that in some instances it becomes a bit harder to keep track of where you’re landing (the “bridge levels” as I call them can be a true pain in the ass to beat).
Now, this is the remastered version of Crash and that means graphical improvements. All new textures, lighting, all that good stuff. The games look really good, the textures look beautiful, the animations are really well made, the shadows and lighting effects look great and it has 4K support, whatever more can you ask for? The art style sits with the rest of the game and the original version as well. Sound-wise, there aren’t many lines to judge the voice acting but I liked what few lines there were. The sounds assets and soundtrack are also well made and I enjoyed listening to it. They really capture the vibe the game goes for I think. I’m yet to play the other two games but if they are of the same quality as this one I’m sure I have two more great experiences in front of me to look forward to.
I don’t really like to discuss the story of games, I don’t like to spoil things and nowadays it’s harder and harder to discuss the story without doing so but since this is a version of game that came out in the original PlayStation, I guess that mostly everyone knows it by now, and if you don’t know the story yet it’s because you really don’t want to, which in my eyes makes it kind of pointless do summarize it length. But I’ll say it’s simplistic but fun, even though it’s mostly absent from the whole game. You have an intro cutscene explaining how Crash came to be and the overall plot of the game and then the epilogue at the end. There are two endings to get, so have fun getting them both.
I really recommend at least trying this gem of a game, for fans of the franchise and new players as well that never delved in the world of Crash. Sony also revealed last year that a remastered version of the Crash kart game is also coming for the PS4 this year, which I’m looking forward to playing it as well.
